How To Use A Pregnancy Test Correctly (And Avoid Common Mistakes) 

Modern pregnancy tests are highly accurate when used correctly, but factors such as testing too early, diluted urine and reading results outside the recommended time window can sometimes lead to confusion. 

Following the manufacturer's instructions carefully can help ensure the most reliable result. 

Step 1: Collect A Urine Sample 

Collect a urine sample in a clean, dry container. 

For the most accurate results, many manufacturers recommend using first morning urine, particularly if you are testing before or around the time of your expected period. 

Step 2: Open The Foil Pouch 

Remove the pregnancy test strip from the foil pouch immediately before use. 

Do not use the test if the foil pouch has already been opened or damaged. 

Step 3: Dip The Pregnancy Test Strip 

Hold the strip by the coloured end and dip the absorbent tip into the urine sample. 

Do not immerse the strip beyond the MAX line printed on the test. 

Follow the dipping time stated in the product instructions. 

Step 4: Place The Test Flat 

Remove the strip from the sample and place it on a clean, dry, flat surface. 

Allow the test to develop undisturbed. 

Step 5: Read The Result Within The Recommended Time 

Always read the result within the reading window stated in the instructions. 

Results viewed after the recommended time may be invalid and can sometimes lead to confusion. 

Should I Use First Morning Urine For A Pregnancy Test? 

In most cases, yes. 

First morning urine is usually the most concentrated sample of the day and may contain the highest concentration of hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin), the hormone detected by pregnancy tests. 

This can be particularly important when: 

• Testing before a missed period 

• Testing very early in pregnancy 

• Investigating a faint result 

Can Drinking Water Affect A Pregnancy Test? 

Yes. 

Drinking large amounts of water or other fluids before testing can dilute your urine. 

In very early pregnancy this may reduce the concentration of hCG and can sometimes make faint positives harder to detect. 

For best results: 

• Avoid excessive fluid intake before testing 

• Use first morning urine whenever possible 

Why Did One Pregnancy Test Show Positive And Another Negative? 

This is one of the most common questions we receive. 

Possible reasons include: 

• Testing very early in pregnancy 

• Different urine concentrations 

• Different test sensitivities 

• Testing at different times of day 

For example, a first morning urine sample may contain a higher concentration of hCG than a sample taken later in the day after several cups of tea, coffee or water.

Is A Faint Line Positive? 

Many women assume a positive pregnancy test line must be dark. 

This is not necessarily true. 

A coloured test line appearing within the recommended reading window may indicate the presence of hCG, even if it is lighter than the control line. 

The darkness of the line alone should not be used to determine whether a result is positive or negative. 

What Happens If I Read My Pregnancy Test Too Late?
