Alternative Site Testing (AST)
Important Information About AST. Sites other than the fingertip may have fewer nerve endings, making blood sample collection from these areas less painful. However, the technique for Alternative Site Testing (AST) differs from fingertip testing. Blood glucose results from AST sites may be significantly different, as glucose levels can change rapidly after meals, insulin, or exercise.
Consult a diabetes healthcare professional before testing from any site other than the fingertip. Results obtained from AST sites may differ significantly, as is the case with all blood glucose monitoring systems.
Rapid changes in glucose levels are likely to occur after eating, insulin dosing, or physical activity. These changes are typically reflected more quickly in fingertip samples than in AST sites.
